NPR (Non Photo-realistic Rendered) Cyberpunk Scene

TOOLS: Blender • After Effects • Adobe Illustrator
SKILLS: Art Director • 2D Animation • 3D Design and Animation
CLIENT: Personal Project

Overview:

This project marks my transition from Cinema 4D to Blender, where I explored Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR) to create a vibrant cyberpunk cityscape. The goal was to blend stylized 3D elements with a strong artistic aesthetic, emphasizing bold lighting, exaggerated forms, and a hand-crafted feel.

Concept & Inspiration

I wanted to capture the essence of a neon-drenched cyberpunk metropolis—rich with atmosphere, towering structures, and a sense of motion. Inspired by anime aesthetics and cel-shaded visuals, I focused on a dreamy nightscape where a cybercar speeds through the futuristic streets.

Modeling & Asset Creation

I modeled all the assets from scratch, ensuring that each building, vehicle, and street element contributed to the city’s depth and storytelling. The structures feature layered details, including neon signs, holographic panels, and industrial elements to evoke a lived-in, immersive world.

NPR Rendering & Shading

For the rendering style, I leaned heavily into NPR techniques within Blender’s Eevee engine. Key aspects included:
  • Flat shading & stylized lighting for a hand-illustrated feel
  • Grease Pencil elements to enhance line work and add a 2D aesthetic
  • Emission shaders & bold color contrasts to emphasize the cyberpunk neon glow
  • Depth cues & fog effects to create atmospheric perspective and enhance the scene’s cinematic look

Animation & Final Composition

I introduced motion through a cybercar racing through the streets, using dynamic camera angles and subtle environmental animations to bring the city to life. The final composition balanced movement, lighting, and framing to achieve an immersive and energetic cyberpunk vibe.

Conclusion

This project was both a technical and creative challenge, pushing me to adapt to Blender’s workflow while refining my NPR rendering approach. It reinforced my passion for stylized 3D art and storytelling through motion and design.
